Marketing is not for the weak

An ecommerce site owner's guide to affiliate marketing | Smart Insights
Affiliate marketing has its wins, but it also comes with a lot of losses. You can spend hours, days, or even months trying to make sales. You spend time planning content, creating posts, uploading videos, writing blogs, sharing links, and doing everything you can to promote a company. The reality is that it is not always easy.

Some months you might earn a few dollars, and other months you might earn nothing at all. I've experienced both. There have been times when sales came in consistently, and there have been long stretches where it felt like I was putting in all the effort for little to no return.
You can also get banned from a lot of places for posting and trying to post since they consider it spam.
Adsense does not always get approved and then you also have to wait for it to actually build up and it only pays so many cents a day if anything.

Many affiliate marketers promote multiple companies at once, expecting faster results. What they don't realize is that thousands of other affiliates are doing the exact same thing. The competition is fierce. You're constantly fighting for visibility, attention, clicks, and conversions.

At its core, affiliate marketing is a competition. You're competing against other affiliates trying to earn the same commission. In many cases, you're even competing against the companies themselves. Businesses run their own advertising campaigns, rank their own websites in search engines, and often have larger marketing budgets than affiliates could ever afford.

When I first started, like many others, I bought into the idea that affiliate marketing was quick and easy money. After ten years of doing this, I can honestly say that's far from the truth. Success is possible, but it requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to keep going when you're not seeing immediate results.

Today, it's even more competitive than it was years ago. AI tools, SEO strategies, social media algorithms, and content automation have changed the landscape. Everyone is trying to get ahead, which means you have to work even harder to stand out.

Despite all of that, I still do affiliate marketing. Not because I'm getting rich from it, but because I still have hope that it can bring in a little extra income. Right now, my husband is undergoing Krystexxa infusions, and there are times when our finances get stretched thin because he has to miss work for treatments. Every dollar helps, and affiliate marketing is one of the ways I continue trying to contribute to our household.

This isn't a post meant to discourage anyone from becoming an affiliate marketer. It's simply the truth from someone who has been doing it for a decade. If you're thinking about getting started, go in with realistic expectations. It can work, but it's not passive income for most people. It's work, it's persistence, it's learning from failures, and sometimes it's holding onto hope when the results aren't there yet.

And honestly, some days, hope is the thing that keeps me going.
